Standardization of a Poly Herbal Unani formulation Used in Joint Diseases

Abstract

Qurs Mufasil is a Unani poly herbal formulation, commonly prescribed for rheumatic conditions. This contains Curcuma longa Linn., Colchium luteum Baker. and Acacia arabica Willd. It is a timely need to standardize the herbal formulation to determine the quality of the drug. Hence, efforts have been made to provide scientific data on standardization of the tablet. Macroscopic evaluation, physicochemical, phytochemical investigation and HPTLC fingerprint profiles were developed according to WHO guidelines. It is a compressed, uncoated, circular tablet, yellow in color, astringent taste and the weight of a tablet is 500 mg. Extractive values were determined using petroleum, chloroform, methanol and aqueous such as cold (1.6±0.15, 3.8 ± 0.25, 9.5 ± 0.4 & 2.93 ± 0.24 % w/w/), and successive (4.09 ± 0.2, 1.49 ± 0.06, 13.75 ± 0.79 & 14.12±0.81 % w/w). Ash values (Total ash 8.07 ± 0.29 %; Acid insoluble 4.87± 0.41%; Water soluble 2.0 ± 0.12%), loss on drying (8.87± 0.18 %), pH value (6.65 0.003), and swelling index (3.57 ± 0.044 ml) were also determined. Phytochemical analysis showed presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, proteins and amino acids. HPTLC fingerprint of methanolic extract, chloroform extract, petroleum ether extract were showed number of spots in different solvents. This would serve as a standard reference for identification and authentication of this Unani formulation regarding its quality before their use in the market.
