Abstract
The Top 20 Principles for Teaching and Learning, developed by the American Psychological Association (APA), provide a research-based framework to enhance Pre-K–12 education by integrating cognitive, motivational, social, and emotional perspectives on learning. This chapter explores these principles with a focus on their application in the Sri Lankan educational context, emphasizing teacher professional development, student well being, and instructional effectiveness. Each principle highlights evidence-based strategies for promoting mastery, creativity, self-regulation, intrinsic motivation, and effective classroom management, while also addressing assessment practices grounded in fairness and psychological science. By adapting these principles to local cultural and classroom environments, Sri Lankan educators can foster deeper understanding, meaningful engagement, and holistic development in learners. The chapter underscores the value of aligning theory with practice to create supportive learning environments that enhance both teaching and learning outcomes, preparing students for lifelong learning and success.
