Abstract
In the contemporary era, Teaching and learning processes integrated with Technology hold a significant
position and are bringing about innovative changes in the field of Education. Specifically, the TPACK
competencies of Teachers are a crucial factor in determining the quality of language teaching and
student engagement. Although the necessity of Digital integration in language Education has increased,
it is observed that Tamil language teaching in Sri Lanka remains rooted in traditional teaching methods.
This study, therefore, aims to investigate how Tamil language teachers utilise their TPACK knowledge
in their teaching and learning processes within a digital environment. Based on the TPACK framework,
the relationship between the teachers' technological competence, pedagogical methods, student
engagement and achievement level improvement was evaluated. The descriptive survey method and a
mixed-methods approach were used to investigate the current status. Data were collected from 55 Tamil
language teachers working in the secondary sections of 35 schools, which are categorised as 1AB, 1C,
and Type 11 in the Katugastota and Wathegama Education Zones. Data was gathered through structured
questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations and then analyzed using the content analysis
method. The main findings of the research revealed that while the majority of teachers have strong
content knowledge, they face challenges in integrating Technological and pedagogical expertise.
Specific challenges acting as barriers to the holistic implementation of TPACK include a lack of self-confidence among teachers, technological limitations, time constraints, and inadequate training.
Furthermore, it was found that learning platforms for experiential learning and digital learning resources
have a positive impact on enhancing student engagement, language proficiency, and self-directed
learning skills. The study offers essential guidance for educational planning and Teacher Training
programs. Additionally, it presents policies and recommendations for elevating the quality of Tamil
language teaching in technology-integrated learning environments in the future.
