We have made a retrospective analysis of 40 consecutive acute peritoneal dialysis procedures conducted by the University Medical Unit, General Hospital, Colombo with respect to the out come of the dialysis procedure. Eleven of the 40 patients died during or soon after (within two weeks) the acute peritoneal dialysis. The following factors in relation to predicting the outcome of an Acute Peritoneal Dialysis have been studied. 1. Age and sex of the patients. 2. Type of Renal Failure ( Acute, Acute on Chronic or Chronic) 3.Aetiology of the Renal Failure. 4.Biochemical parameters at presentation for Acute Peritoneal Dialysis. 5. A multiple-organ- failure index (M.O.F Index) 1 has been worked out to differentiate a complicated from a non-complicated Acute Renal Failure on a graded scale. 6. Presence of infection. From our study factors 2,5 and 6 were significantly influencing prognosis whilst factors 1, 3 and 4 did not appear to offer important prognostic guidelines.
