Abstract

To compare the outcome of pregnancy beyond 40 weeks gestation as regards induction of labour versus spontaneous onset of labour. A prospective observational study carried out in antenatal wards and labour rooms of Tertiary care station (Castle street hospital for women and North Colombo Teaching Hospital). Two hundred and eighteen uncomplicated singleton pregnancies beyond 40 weeks of gestation were studied in spontaneous onset of labour group (n=115, 52.8 percent ) and induction of labour (n=103, 42,2 percent) group. The obstetric outcome, intrapartum complications, neonatal outcome, postpartum complications and hospital stay were analyzed in each group. Induction of labour is associated with increased incidence of intrapartum complications, oxytocic use, analgesic use ,m operative delivery and hospital stay , Postpartum complications and neonatal outcome were similar in both SOL and IOL groups
