Abstract:
Mothers presenting in labour were screened for two sexually transmitted disease pathogens
neisseria gonorrhoeae and chlamydia trachomatis.It revealed an incidence 0.25 per cent
gonococcal infection in pregnancy and 0.25 per cent incidence of gonococcal ophthal mia
neonatorum.Chlamydia trachomatis showed an incidence of 5 per cent in pregnancy and
0.75 per cent in the etiology of ophthal mia neonatorum. The gonococcal infection when
analyzed together with the Matara and Rathnapura data showed that mothers under 30 years
and in social classes I,II and III should (on marital partners occupation) higher incidence of
ophthalmia neonatorum
