A retrospective study spanning 10 years from 1980 to 1989 was undertaken to evaluate
patient characteristics, treatment, and it' s outcome in ovarian cancer patients treated at NCISri Lanka. Majority of the patients with epithelial cancer belonged to the 40 to 65 years of
age group but 16.8 per cent of the patients with epithelial histology were below 30 years of
age. Treatment given had been the standard treatment for ovarian cancer during the period
concerned. Survival figures were calculated by the Kaplan- Meier method. The 5-year
disease -free survival in all patients was 22 per cent while the disease free survival in
epithelial cancers in stages I, II, III and IV were 60 per cent, 18per cent,16 per cent, and 4
per cent respectively. A significant difference in disease-free survival of patients with
epithelial histology was found between the age groups, below 65 years and 65 and above.
The survey also revealed certain shortcomings at various stages of patient management
which need remedial action |
