Sarartha Sangrahaya (SS), the first medical book with a scientific basis, written after king Ravana's era in Sri Lanka, is a medical treatise written by King Buddhadasa. (362-409 AD). It has mentioned diagnosis of diseases, treatments and drug preparations along with recipes. The contents are arranged with similarity in arrangement with Suśruta Samhitaas well as with unique concepts. Unmāda Roga or Psychotic diseases are mentioned in the 17th chapter of SS. This study aims to review the Unmāda roga mentioned in SS comparing with authentic Ayurveda texts Caraka Samhita, Suśruta Samhita and modern co-relations through a brief systematic review. King Buddhadasa came forward with causative factors, Pathogenesis, Types of Unmāda and its treatment protocols also. He has specially mentioned 8 types of Unmāda such as Vātaja, Pittaja, Kaphaja, Tridoṣaja, Ādhija, Viṣaja, Bhūtaja Unmāda and this categorization has been used in Deshiya Cikitsa. These diseases can be related with modern psychotic conditions such as Schizophrenia, Mood disorders, Manias and other pathological conditions. Unmāda treatments have been used as a separate entity in Traditional medicine in Sri Lanka as there have been Traditional Weda Parampara specialized in Unmāda Roga. SS describes Kvāta, Taila, Gṛita, Nasya preparations recipes, along with the basic treatment protocols as Pancakarma. All the medicinal remedies and treatment procedures mentioned in SS are similar to Caraka Samhita and Suśruta Samhita except "Mahābhūtarāvana gṛta", a remedy for Unmāda, which has been only found in SS. SS has given sufficient description on etiology, types, and prognosis meanwhile it has discussed Cikitsā for many diseases more broadly. Key words –Deṣhiya Cikitsa, Mahābhūtarāvana gṛta, Samhita, Sarartha Sangrahaya |
