Abstract:
Scuba diving tourism is one of the fast-growing tourism activities globally. Therefore, it
is identified as a potential adventure tourism segment. Sri Lanka Scuba diving tourism
segment has been identified as a niche market segment with high potential to attract
young individuals in all source markets. This study was conducted to determine the
challenges of developing scuba diving tourism in Sri Lanka since the lack of information
on recreational scuba diving development. The researchers conducted qualitative case
study research to achieve the research objectives. Using semi-structured interviews, this
study covered all 8 PADI registered diving centres in the Trincomalee district and four
government institutions. The results reveal that less government support, lack of human
resource development, and negative impact on fishing activities are highlighted issues to
develop scuba diving in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, this study provides recommendations to
mitigate those barriers to developing recreational scuba diving. Scuba diving tourism is a
blooming adventure water sports segment in Sri Lanka. This study's findings are
significant for tourism and other relevant authorities for developing, regulating, or
making recreational scuba diving policies in Sri Lanka.
