dc.description.abstract Objectives: This study aimed at gaining an understanding of senior citizens’ lifestyles from childhood and clarifying the factors important in sustaining their quality of life (QOL). Methods: Using purposive sampling, in-depth interviews by semi-structured interview guide were conducted among five senior citizens in a Sri Lankan community. The interviews were analysed narratively. Results: Three males and two females over the age of 70 were interviewed. All had obtained a decent level of education and lived with extended family. They had sound relationships with their children and were engaged in social roles, keeping them occupied and giving their lives a sense of meaning. They made use of both Western and traditional medicine, including religious activities, depending on their ailments. Conclusion and further research: The QOL of independent community-dwelling senior citizens in Sri Lanka was related to education, psychological independence, sustaining daily life, engagement in social activities, and satisfaction with children’s support, house sitting for their children, and engaging in multiple health activities to prevent and treat symptoms. Further narrative research is suggested to highlight the individual experiences ofsenior citizens, which will help develop an effective strategy for sustaining the QOL of this population in Sri Lanka. en_US
