L i t t l e had been s a i d about the r i g h t s of g i r l s and
women i n the Nuwara E l i y a Region, the f i r s t of which was t he
r i g h t to e d u c a t i o n i n i t s w i d e s t sense, an e d u c a t i o n that
would enable them t o develop t h e i r true i d e n t i t y . Once they
have access t o e d u c a t i o n t h e r e would be no problems i n r e g a r d
t o t h e i r r i g h t s , and those same r i g h t s could become harmful i f
women are i n c a p a b l e o f e x e r c i s i n g them.
T h i s study aims at b r i n g i n g i n t o f o 'cus the urgent
need of e d u c a t i n g g i r l s and women i n Formal and Non-formal
e d u c a t i o n a l programmes» F i r s t Chapter devotes to p i n - p o i nt
the world-wide urgent need of e d u c a t i n g g i r l s and women i n e v e ry
p o s s i b l e way. The Formal s c h o o l system i s e v a l u a t e d i n Chapter
two to b r i n g out the n e c e s s a r y changes needed. The present
e d u c a t i o n a l c r i s i s i s d i s c u s s e d to suggest new aims i n e d u c a t i o n*
Next Chapter i s devoted to d e s c r i b e non-formal e d u c a t i o n al
o p p o r t u n i t i e s as a remedy to cover up the i l l s of f o r m a l e d u c a t i on
F o u r t h Chapter i s devoted to examine the d i f f e r e n t l e v e l s of
p a r t i c i p a t i o n of g i r l s and women i n t h e s c h o o l system i n the
Nuwara E l i y a Region and t o assess the e x t e n t t o which women
p a r t i c i p a t e i n t h e i n s t i t u t i o n a l p r o v i s i o n f o r f o r m a l education»
I n the next Chapter Non-formal e d u c a t i o n a l programmes are
examined here w i t h i n the c o n t e x t of the f o r m a l system and i t s
r o l e i d e n t i f i e d i n r e l a t i o n to the needs of g i r l s and women |
