dc.description.abstract Coscinium fenestratum (Gaertn.) Colebr. (Menispermaceae), called “Venival” in Sri Lanka. It is used in traditional medicines for treatment of diabetes and other ailments. The stem of C. fenestratum contains berberine, which is the major active compound. The interest in the biological activities of this plant has accelerated in recent years. Its stem powder is now mostly used in traditional medicine. In the present study we have done the comparative analytical studies and chromatographically study with different market samples from various parts of the country to identify any variations in C. fenestratum powder (n=5).We measured moisture content, total ash, acid insoluble ash and made thin layer chromatography as basic standardization methods of these powders. Total moisture content, total ash and acid insoluble ash respectively were in the ranges of 6-10%, 3-6% and 2-4%.Thin layer chromatographic fingerprints of each extract showed similar pattern with Rf values of authenticated sample. In conclusion, our findings indicate that some stem powder samples of C. fenestratum varied with our authenticated sample. This indicates that there should be strong drug standardization and quality control methods implement for herbal drug suppliers. en_US
