Title: The educational thought and educational contribution of sir ponnambalam arunachalam

Abstract: An analysis of the factors that influenced the Educational Thought and Educational Contributions of Sir P. Arunachalam will be attempted with an account of his l i f e and career as a background to the study. His concept of education and i t s function K i l l be evolved and evaluated. The general philosophy underlying his thought on elementary, secondary and higher education will be enunciated and his contribution to their development will be stated and estimated. The problem of the education of the under-privileged groups in Ceylon inclusive of the Rodiyas will be c r i t i c a l ly studied and the solution offered by him will be discussed and assessed. His concept of the interaction between nationalism and education will be analysed in i t s historical perspective. His thought on the linguistic and religious factors in education and his contributions i n this regard w i l l be discussed and evaluated. Finally, Sir Arunachalam*s concept of education for national development w i l l be stated and assessed in the light of modern economic thought. The study will conclude with a summary of the research.
