E: To determine the predictive value of 160 mg/dl as the "cut off" value in the two hour blood glucose (2hBG) concentration of the 75g OGTT in the management of diabetes mellitus complicating pregnancy. SETTING: University Obstetrics Unit, De Soysa Hospital for Women, Colombo. METHOD: Pregnant women with 2hBG > 120 mg/dl in the 75g OGTT identified during the current gestation were studied prospectively until the early puerperium using serial blood glucose profiles. Their need for antenatal insulin injections based on serial blood sugar profiles, were matched against the 2hBG value of the OGTT. The demographic data, family history of diabetes mellitus, and the pregnancy outcome and birth weight were recorded. RESULTS: Sixty six women with abnormal OGTT were recruited. 45 (68 percent) had a 2hBG exceeding 160 mg/dl. 37/45 with 2hBG > l60mg/dl required insulin therapy during pregnancy and 8/45 needed dietary intervention alone. Of 21 women with 2hBG < in mellitus diabetes of treatment insulin for need the predictor good a is pregnancy during performed OGTT 75g glucose blood 2hour dl mg 160 value oft? ?cut A CONCLUSION: (p="0.25)." g 88 - + 2883 weight birth mean and percent 3.5 mortality perinatal had alone diet diabetic with managed those g; 104 2868 0 was group treated outcome The respectively 1.2 33.0 0.4 32.2 were groups untreated age maternal percent. predictive negative positive percent; specificity="71.4" percent, sensitivity="97.2" off? 2hBC insulin. required woman 01 dl,>en_US
