To compare the effectiveness of postprandial blood sugar over 50 grams glucose challange test in the screening of gestational diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

A comparative study was conducted at obstetric unit Teaching hospital Jaffna during the period of 10 months from July 2005 to April 2006. Two hundred and sixty one women in period of gestation between 26 to 28 weeks were randomly allocated into two groups. One group was tested with Postprandial blood sugar levels where as the other one was tested with 50 g Glucose challenge test. Then the following week both groups underwent 100g Oral glucose tolerance test according to American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria. The sensitivity and specificity of Postprandial blood sugar and that of Glucose challenge test Twenty seven women (103 percent diagnosed with Gestational diabetes mellitus. The sensitivity of the Postprandial blood sugar levels was 50 percent . But the sensitivity of Glucose challenge test was 45.5 percent specificity of ostprandial blood sugar was 92.1 percent where as the specificity of Glucose challenge test was 57.9 percent The sensitivity and specificity, of Postprandial blood sugar is higher than that of Glucose challenge test. So the Postprandial blood sugar is better test than Glucose challenge test.
