Abstract: Modern machines in homes. on streets and in industrial plants make life much easier for all. But the clatter of the machines places most of the people in noisy sur~oundings which is . inevitable and such noises at times reach alarming levels. the ~ A case of study i~Powerloom Industry. This is selected to . -1i1a~sui'e the noise level in the working environment. its consequent n effect on the workers in hearing during their occupational p~iod. and to comment on the measures that are to be adopted to reduce this .. hazard. Two medium scale factories and a large scale factory are selected and the workers in the weaving section are tested to study the loss in hearing. The sound pressure level in the working environment of all these factories is also measured. Inorder to compar~ the hearing level of weaTers with that of normal people, subjects are chosen from other sectors who are exposed to the noise in the normal environment. ~ The degree of hearing loss and the sound pressure level in the working environment necessitated the measurement with aid of an Amplivox Audiometer and a Precision Sound Level Meter " respectively. This study revealed that there is hearing loss among weavers due to the exceeding level of noise in all the three factories. The way to reduce the hazard is to reduce the noise from its source and by wearing ear protectors.
